Hart Island Press Tour

City Island, Hart Island, The Bronx. June, 2018.

Hart Island is an island controlled by the NYC Dept of Correction. It is used as a Potter's Field (mass grave site) for unknown and unclaimed bodies, and is off limits to the public. In Spring of 2018, I was a part of a media access tour, as a city councilman pressed for more public access to the island. As of now, private tours can access only a small gazebo just beyond the ferry landing, but no other part of the island. Once per month, the Dept of Correction allows family members of the deceased to visit the gravesites. Each gravesite is a single grave marker where 150 coffins are burried in a large trench.
